School Districts and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009

New York State schools stand to get a substantial amount of money from the stimulus package that President Obama signed into law in February.  The U.S. Department of Education estimates that New York State will receive $2.5 billion in funds designated as “State Stabilization Funds” in the stimulus package, whose aim is to help avert reductions in education services and to fund expected increases. School systems have discretion to use some of this money for school modernization.  Identifying school construction projects as “shovel ready” projects will go a long way toward achieving President Obama’s goal of “creating and preserving jobs” by building infrastructure.

New York State will also receive $550 million under a different part of the stimulus program that and school modernization is an eligible use of this funding.  The most direct beneficiary of Washington’s stimulus legislation will be New York State’s public schools, which are in line for $2.5 billion in additional federal aid over the next two years.  This roundtable discussion features a practical discussion of strategies for New York’s school districts to effectively secure and utilize funds from the stimulus package.
